“Web 2.0 is a term describing the trend in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to enhance creativity, information sharing, and, most notably, collaboration among users. These concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities and hosted services, such as social-networking sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies. ” (Wikipedia, 2008).
Based on principles and philosophies of collaboration, self-organization and the power of collective intelligence, Web 2.0 is changing how technology solutions are being designed and developed. It is resetting user expectations and forcing a shift in our commonly held constructs of the lines between solution designers, builders and the relationship to end users.
These changes are creating a future that we are just beginning to understand. What will this mean to healthcare delivery systems, to our workforce, to the patients we serve? What areas of healthcare are well positioned to benefit from open source and mass collaboration and where should we be concerned?
During this session we will explore these questions and begin a dialogue to understand Web 2.0 in healthcare. We will also look at successful Web 2.0 examples to see how the new models work and what impact all this will have on these areas in healthcare.
