Words and terms for hospital and medical related activities

Internet delivered technology: Technology that is accessable via a web browser over a network such as the Internet or an intranet.

Needs-based staffing: Accounts for patient acuity and ensures every unit has the appropriate number of nurses – with the skill sets needed – to provide good care given the complexity of patients’ conditions and the intensity of services patients are likely to require during the next shift.

Open shift management (OSM): The ability to manage open and available nursing shifts that follows a hospital’s staffing and scheduling rules, such as preventing overtime.

Scheduling and shift management: The ability to manage schedules and shifts using software-as-a-service (SaaS) technology.

Self-Scheduling: A system that enables nurses to access units’ overall schedule's so that they can request shifts and swap shifts with their colleagues. This helps nurses balance the demands of work and home life, and improves job satisfaction and decreases turnover.

ShiftConnect: Enterprise-wide advanced shift management and scheduling for all shift types, including core, non-duty, on-call, and open shifts.
