During difficult economic times, the natural tendency is to tighten controls and strengthen management oversight. While this approach may serve in some areas, such as budgeting, in the case of staffing it could prevent the discovery of sorely needed opportunities for improved labor performance and cost-savings.

It is not surprising that given all of the pressures leadersare faced with today, giving attention to employee management relationships and employee satisfaction seems counter-intuitive. We are, after all, experiencing a surge of workers reentering the healthcare workforce as it becomes more and more difficult for families to make ends meet. However, deeper examination of labor productivity points to the increased importance of a qualified and engaged workforce and the role staff play in effectiveness, efficiency, safety and quality outcomes –and thus overall financial performance.
